The statewide recognition honors a teacher who goes above and beyond with STEM-integrated teaching that encourages innovation, learning and growth in students. The award announcement recognizes Hisey as a teacher who "engages students in inquiry-based learning to develop creativity, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills."

A teacher at Bio-Med Science Academy in Rootstown, Ohio, Hisey combines STEM concepts and creative expression for her students through projects such as "Dance Your Reaction," "The Museum of the Chemical Elements" and a "Science Friday" each week.

Additionally, her students analyzed the gaps in STEM fields - such as the low engagement of women of color - and designed an intervention plan for elementary or middle school students.
